Those who have read Jaqueline Carey's wonderful "Kushiel's Legacy" series would know this character...
Poser, Photoshop.
As ever, thank you for viewing.
What the f*ck! This is freaking' awesome, I can't help my jaw from dropping! This is sooo amazing!
I thougth it was just a photo, but I was wrong for sure.
Ah.. even thought I haven't done any commenting in a long time.... my my... this caught my eye from the front page, and seeing how it's my favorite heroine from my favourite series, it's impossible not to comment.
She does looks way more beautiful than the cover art in the books, much more like the way I imagined her, on the very least. Hmm... the tattoo is different as well as far as memory serves me, altough it looks beautiful nevertheless. Hmm... I think if I wanted to be picky, I'd mention out that the eye color also seems a bit different... wasn't the color some deep deep tone of red which had a name more fancy than I'd remember? Not that ruby-red doesn't looks great on her either. And the hair... well, I am complaining too much already I don't have a room to complain though.. it's been years since I read the series, and I don't even have the books anymore (I lent them to a friend) as to have the reference art. Altough in the reference art they did her hair a lot more dark. Well.. we could always say this is your interpretation of the character, and let it be with the pickyness. She does makes for a beautiful character... at least on the face department I so much prefer your version; she looks younger, too.
Artisticly... I don't know how to comment on renders. It bugs me because render quality has gotten so good that almost anyone can look a real-looking render... altough if my memory serves right, it ain't that easy yet. One thing that renders don't do on their own, is apply a smoothness to the image, an almost blur sort of softness to the edges, which you seem to have applied rather well to the image, giving her an almost dreamy feel. The hair... it definitely doesn't feels rendered, it looks very good... better than a render at being natural, however I feel some sort of flatness to it, as if the sense of depth isn't quite... perfect, but maybe that's just me, the details on it looks great as hair, it's just the whole thing doesn't seems to have the kind of depth I was expecting out of that hair? Dunno... I don't know how to express myself.. but since an image is YOUR way of expressing yourself, you have a right to keep things the way you want them rather than the way the viewers would had expected otherwise.
Well what's left to say..? It's has a simple, thoughtful background that compliments her nature nicely... it's a beautiful image, and a wonderful interpretation of Phedre no Delauney nevertheless.

First off, thank you much for taking the time to comment, and for the compliments. Secondly, no, I definitely did not use the books' cover art as a reference; no offence to the artist but that is not at all how I see Phedre (obviously ). Phedre's eyes are supposed to be dark brown (bistre was the term used), with a bright red mote in the left one. The tattoo also follows the descriprion in the book: it was supposed to have spanned the entire lenght of her spine, not sit in the middle of her lower back like it does on the covers. The hair was said to be sable;any darker and it would have to have blue highlights, which would resemble Melisande's. It was not rendered--the hair, I mean--but hand-drawn in Photoshop, and the lighing of the image altogether calls for few highlights, so maybe that's why it seems a bit flat to you. Anyway, thanks again. It was good to see a fellow Carey fan around here.
